How To Crochet The Slip Stitch

The Slip Stitch...
Lesson #6 In Our Crochet For Beginners Series!

The slip stitch is a closing stitch or a traveling stitch. That I mean by that is that you use a slip stitch to connect two pieces of crochet together, like when you need to join a chain to form a circle.

Or you use a slip stitch when you want to travel along from one point on your row to another without adding any bulk to your work. So if you want to move down a row a few stitches then begin crocheting again without cutting your yarn you'd use a slip stitch.

Insert your hook under both loops of the next stitch (through the end chain stitch if connecting a chain to form a circle).

Yarn over and pull up a loop...

You now have two loops on your crochet hook.

Continue pulling that loop all the way through the loop currently on your hook.

Congratulations! You just created your first slip stitch!

If you are using the slip stitch to travel to a new location on your crochet...

Continue across your work to desired location.  Then continue with the crochet stitch of your choice.  In the example here we have done 4 slip stitches followed by 3 double crochet stitches.

Well, there you have it.  The slip stitch is a simple yet essential crochet stitch to learn.  You will need to know how to make them in all but the simplest of crochet patterns.
