How To Crochet The Slip Knot

How To Crochet A Slip Knot...
Lesson #1 In Our Crochet For Beginners Series!

Learning how to make a slip knot is the very first skill you must master when you learn how to crochet.  Add this skill to your repertoire with ease using the step-by-step instruction you'll find in this video and the photo tutorial that follows.

How To Make A Slip Knot Without A Crochet Hook...

First fold your yarn over as shown, keeping the short tail on the right

Twist the fold forward so the yarn attached to the skein lays over the short tail. This stage will resemble an awareness ribbon.

Reach thru the loop created by the twist from front to back. Grab the long yarn attached to your skein and pull it thru the loop.

Hold onto the loop you just pulled up and gently tug down on the short tail to tighten up your knot.

Insert your crochet hook thru your loop or slip knot.

Gently tug on the long tail or yarn attached to your skein to snug the loop/slip knot onto your crochet hook to finish.  Congratulations. You have just made a slip knot and placed it onto your crochet hook.

How To Make A Slip Knot Using A Crochet Hook…

First fold your yarn over as shown, keeping the short tail on the right

Bring your crochet hook up from the bottom between two tails at the fold.

Twirl your crochet hook in a circle by bringing the hook end towards yourself, down then around. This makes a twist in the thread that looks much like an "Awareness Ribbon".

Dip your crochet hook down between the two tails.

Lift your crochet hook up and catch the top yarn (the long one or the one connected to the skein).

Pull that yarn thru the twisted loop already on your crochet hook. (See above two photos)

Snug the loop onto your hook by gently pulling on the long yarn tail (the one attached to your ball of skein).

Congratulation. You have just made a slip knot with a crochet hook!

I know that felt complicated.  And seemed (in writing I encourage you to watch the video, too) like a lot of steps but trust me, with a little practice you'll be making them in less than 2 seconds.

Not only that you'll have trouble remembering the steps.  Your hands will just "do it" for you with no thought required LOL.  It took me longer to slow down and figure out exactly what I was doing so I could show you than it ever did for me to learn how to make a slip knot in the first place.
