How To Crochet The Single Crochet

The Single Crochet Stitch...
Lesson #3 In Our Crochet For Beginners Series!

The single crochet stitch is the first fabric making stitch new crocheters learn.   When it comes right down to it, it's probably also the most used of all the crochet stitches.

This is because it creates a very solid and rather dense material when worked by itself.  And because it stabilizes other stitches when worked in rows between them.

Our step-by-step video and photo tutorials will have you mastering this basic crochet stitch in no time flat!  So grab yourself a crochet hook and some yarn.  Then hunker down in a quiet place where the cat won't be batting at your yarn and practice along with us.

How To Crochet The Single Crochet Stitch

Start with a row of chain stitches as long as your project plus one.  So for example, if you are doing a bit of fabric 10 stitches wide you'll need to make 11 chain stitches.  That's because you need ONE stitch to turn your work (see note below).

Insert your crochet hook into the SECOND CHAIN from the hook.

Yarn Over.

Pull the yarn though the chain stitch.

You now have two loops on your crochet hook.

Yarn over a second time.

Pull the yarn through BOTH loops on your hook.

Snug it up and admire your first single crochet stitch!

Repeat to end of row.

Single Crochet NOTES:

To turn your work and make a second row.  Chain one, turn work then proceed across subsequent rows as above with the following change...

Instead of splitting the stitch as you must when building from a chain you must insert your hook under BOTH loops of the previous stitch as shown to the left.

Practice until your tension is smooth and your stitches uniform.  Remember mastering crochet for beginners is all about the tension.
