How To Crochet The Half Double Crochet Stitch

The Half Double Crochet Stitch...
Lesson #4 In Our Crochet For Beginners Series!

My all time favorite, the half double crochet stitch is easy to learn.  The fabric builds fast and it's easy on your wrists because there is such a fluid motion to working this stitch.

Watch this video to learn how to make this simple, versatile stitch.

Don't forget you can pause and rewind the video as you work along with me as many times as you need.  No judgement here.  Then use the photo tutorial below as a reminder or refresher.

How To Crochet The Half Double Crochet Stitch...
A Photo Tutorial For Beginners

Row One...

Start off with a length of chain stitch.  You'll begin working in the 3rd chain from the hook.  (I like to find the spot and pinch it or just in front of it so I don't lose my spot.)

Yarn over.

Slip your crochet hook thru the 3rd stitch from the hook.

Yarn over and pull up a loop (this means pull the yarn through the chain and keep a loop on your hook)

Now you have three loops on your crochet hook.

Yarn over again.

Pull your yarn through all three loops on your hook.

You have just made your first half double crochet stitch!  (technically, it's the second stitch of your row because the two chain stitches you skipped form the first actual stitch.  But this is the first one YOU MADE so... )

Repeat to the end of your row of chain stitches.

Row Two...

Chain two and turn your work over.

Yarn over and work a half double crochet into the 2nd stitch from the hook.

Be sure you go under BOTH loops of the stitch from the previous row (Unless your pattern specifically tells you to use only the front or back loop)

Repeat to the end of your row.

And there you have it.  You just made your second row of half double crochet stitches.  Didn't that work up nice and quick?  Isn't it a very smooth stitch to work?  Let me know if you agree with me in the comments below.  As always if you get stuck or have any questions just holler "HELP ME" and someone will be more than happy to untangle you.
